WRI-13

Every three years, the Water Rock Interaction Working Group of the International Association of GeoChemistry meets for a week of science and collegiality in a different area of the world. For 2010 the working group calls its members and interested scientists from around the world to convene from 16-20 August 2010 in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Guanajuato, Mexico for the Water-Rock Interaction XIII Symposium.

The conference will include topical sessions on:

  • Water-rock interactions in geothermal systems
  • Pore-water chemistry during evolution of sediments and sedimentary rocks
  • Ore deposits and ore forming processes
  • Water-rock interactions in mine tailings
  • Water-rock-organic matter interactions in the origin of petroleum
  • Water-rock-biota interactions in biogeochemical processes
  • Water-rock interactions in watersheds
  • Role of mineral surfaces in kinetics of weathering
  • Water-rock interactions in karst
  • Solute interactions during transport in the vadose zone
  • Water-rock interaction controlling groundwater quality
  • Dating techniques for groundwater
  • Role of water-rock-gas interaction in sequestration of CO2
  • Significance of water-rock interaction for remediation of contaminated sites
  • Recent developments in the measurements and applications of stable and radiogenic isotopes

GSA Annual Meeting

IAGC will continue its presence and involvement in the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting (http://www.geosociety.org/meetings/2009/). The IAGC Business Office has had a booth at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting each year since 2004, and will do so again at this year’s 18-21 October meeting in Portland, OR. Please stop by and visit with Mel and Sim Gascoyne, if you will be coming to the meeting. Volunteers to help staff the booth for an hour or two during the GSA meeting are always needed, so please let Mel know (gascoyne@granite.mb.ca) if you are willing to help and when. The recipients of the 2009 IAGC Awards will be showcased in the Affiliated Societies gallery during the course of the meeting. During the meeting, IAGC will sponsor the topical session on Sources, Transport, Fate and Toxicology of Trace Elements in the Environment, co-chaired by LeeAnn Munk, Dave Long, and Berry Lyons.
